While a trip to Prince Edward Island might not always be in the cards, I recently discovered a delightful alternative that brought my Anne fantasies to life: Black Creek Pioneer Village.
From Toronto to a Victorian Era Oasis
Last summer, I embarked on a journey to Canada, hoping to visit the iconic Prince Edward Island. However, fate had other plans, and I found myself in Toronto instead. Not one to be deterred, I did some digging and stumbled upon a hidden gem: Black Creek Pioneer Village. This living history museum in southern Ontario promised a glimpse into 19th-century Canadian life, a time period that resonates deeply with Anne's world.
Stepping into Anne's World at Black Creek Pioneer Village
As I entered Black Creek Pioneer Village, it felt like I'd been transported back to the Victorian Era. The village was a meticulously crafted snapshot of 19th-century Canadian life, complete with charming buildings, knowledgeable staff dressed in period attire, and even adorable farm animals. It was as if I'd walked directly into the pages of Anne of Green Gables.
I spent hours wandering the village, exploring the blacksmith's shop, the general store, and even the quaint schoolhouse.Every corner I turned offered a new delight, from the aroma of freshly baked bread wafting from the bakery to the rhythmic clacking of the loom in the weaver's cottage. It was an immersive experience that allowed me to truly connect with the past.
More Than Just a Pioneer Village
What sets Black Creek Pioneer Village apart is its commitment to telling a comprehensive story of Canadian history. They go beyond the typical "pioneer" narrative, acknowledging the complex relationship between settlers and Indigenous peoples. Informative displays throughout the village shed light on Indigenous cultures, traditions, and contributions to the region. While much more needs to be done, it was nice to seem them at least try to recognize the colonial nature of Canadian history.
A Dream Realized (Almost)
While my original plan of visiting Prince Edward Island didn't pan out, I couldn't have been happier with my detour to Black Creek Pioneer Village. It's a place where Anne of Green Gables fans can truly immerse themselves in the atmosphere of Victorian Era Canada.
